Q: How do you handle
being a good guy and a dark guy in this movie?
Toby: First of all,
I don’t really look at it like a good guy or a bad guy, although
he does make some choices that I think are going to be a little
shocking for people, and fans will be surprised at Peter going down
that road. This is something Sam (the director) and I worked a lot
on because we don’t want to lose the audience caring for the
character, but we do want to push it. We don’t want to make
it too scary, we want it to be dark, but still have some humor and
some fun with it. So we’re constantly working on the exact
tone of it. I had a lot of fun doing it as an actor. There’s
a different side of Peter Parker.
Q: Do you ever think
about life after Spiderman?
Toby Well first of all, if I don’t
want to do more movies, I don’t have to do anymore movies.
So that’s up to me, which wasn’t necessarily up to me
before this film, because I was contracted to three of them. I’ve
had a great time doing them, I’ve enjoyed it and I’m
glad I’ve done all three movies. We may make more of them
or a fourth one, if there’s a story worth telling and a right
team of actors and Sam is on board, then I would consider doing
a fourth one.
Q: How did Spiderman change your life?
Toby: A lot of things changed in my
life. I can’t exactly attribute certain things in my life
to that. I think everything affects everything. But certainly I’m
more recognized. At first, I was a little less comfortable with
it. It was a little harder for me to function normally publicly.
But really, I’ve just gotten more comfortable with it and
I don’t really sweat it as much anymore.
Q: How would you react if a girl said
no to marrying you?
Toby: I just couldn’t
imagine! It just wouldn’t happen to me! (Laughs) Maybe I would
careful and make sure what I knew the answer would be before I asked.
Q: What about the
ring in the movie? I heard it was made by your fiancée?
Toby: TShe made the locket. Kirsten
wears the little heart locket in the movie and she made that. She
didn’t make the ring.
Q: What do you think
is the themes are behind this movie – it seems to be revenge?
Toby: Yeah, I think vengeance, forgiveness,
there’s the big theme of the franchise with great power comes
great responsibility which I think is a blanket idea of having -
Peter’s learning lessons in each movie, they may be slightly
different lessons, but they can all fall under that umbrella. I
think there are a lot of themes running through the film and it
all depends what you get from it, I guess.
Q: There are three
villains in this film, and maybe even four including you, the dark
side, did you have a favorite?
Toby: Including me, I would probably
have to say me.
Q: Did you like
playing the villain?
Toby: I had a good time doing that.
It was more of an internal battle. Building his story arc was fun
in terms of the villains outside of myself, I think they are all
so different and I appreciate them for what they are. Sandman was
a villain from the comic books that I always wanted to see in a
Spiderman movie. I was really excited about that. I think we tied
him into Peter’s story line very well. Terry Osborne that
was the cliff hanger from the second movie. That one was probably
the most emotional.
Q: Do you have a
mean wild side like your character?
Toby: I don’t know, I guess you
have to ask that question to people who know me personally. I’m
a whole person so I’ve got all kinds of stuff going on. I
don’t necessarily present it to the press.
Q: Is there a significance
of Peter Parker getting rid of the dark suit in a church?
Toby: The setting we felt would be dramatic
and would have certain weight, but I don’t think anybody thought
it would have a specific comment.
Q: Are you going
to take a break from acting now that you’re a father?
Toby: I want to work and I also love
being dad, so I’m going to figure it out as I go and try to
figure the right balance. I did kind of clear out my schedule right
when she was born for a little bit, so I could be really present.
And I’m away from the house now working, so you just have
to find a good balance.
Q: You’re
32, and you still have a boyish face, is that a hindrance in your
career?
Toby: I think definitely, I look however
old I look and that’s going to exclude me from certain parts
and give me the opportunity to do other parts. I don’t feel
like it’s been a hindrance in anyway so far, I do think that
historically the meatier roles are for people in their thirties
and forties, so in that way, I have that to look forward to it.
But I feel very fortunate with the films I’ve gotten to work
on.
Q: Would you like
your daughter to enter the industry?
Toby: Well, she’s three and a
half months old so not for a while. She can do whatever she wants
to do.
