Romancing the Stone.
Although a lot of designers are making the perennial girls
best friend new again via architectural designs or through
influences cute and girly, Paris-bred designer Pierre Garms
wanted to bring an entirely different facet to the timeless gem.
He not only accomplished this with his thoroughly original Diamond
in the Rough collection, but threw some very masculine designs
and some great unisex styles into the mix.
This winning idea came to life during Oscar Week 2003. Garms was
generating a buzz among celebrities and stylists with his clever
collection, Keepsakes, which featured clear or colorful resins
housing a variety of precious items from preserved flowers to photos
to pieces of various heirlooms. However, a chance meeting with a
major player from LLD (the second largest diamond mining company
in the world) led to a concept that would turn the notion of diamonds
as heirlooms on its head.
Rather than settle for anything traditional, Garms integrated the
beauty of natural, freshly-mined rough diamonds in a full spectrum
of colors (cognac, champagne, blue, green, pink, lavendar), preserved
them in luminous resins and offset them with other gorgeously earthy
materials (red coral, turquoise, volcanic sand, copper and silver)
to create something which epitomizes modern elegance. The pendants
are suspended from coordinating, adjustable leather cords or invisible
wires, and are completed with certificates of authenticity.
Although each piece is punctuated with a faceted diamond, they
are as individual as the wearer, with a specific color, shape and
formation of the stones. Famous individuals sporting Garms
creations include David Carradine, Joanna Cassidy and Amy Davidson.
Priced between $500 and $1500, Garmss Diamond in the Rough
collection puts owning multiple carats of diamonds within anybodys
reachmeaning they will probably become the best friends of
more and more people (not to mention a most sparkling holiday gift
idea!).
