At The 2008 Kari Feinstein Winter Style Lounge, named for the turn of events caused by the Writers’ Guild strike that curtailed Golden Globes fun and games, and benefited Writers Guild Industry Support Fund, Olivia Edgren (one of Kari’s savvy and capable girls), was preaching the gospel of Rubber Duck weatherproof boots mainly to celebrities gearing up for Sundance. However, when Olivia got word of the fact I was headed to Quebec City on a special 400th Anniversary/Winter Carnival press trip, she insisted I had to try their Snow Joggers to experience just how much fun they were to wear.
Though L.A. is obviously not known for its snow, ice and salt, I figured a trip to Quebec City for its 400th anniversary would be the perfect place to give the boots a test run. Fashion-wise, the shiny black style I opted for bore a striking resemblance to comparable boots designed by Prada or Hogan, but with a gentle $110 price tag—so much easier to weather. Traveling with these plucky Ducks was also a breeze as they weigh very little and take up little room in the suitcase. The real test, however, was marching through the icy beauty of Quebec’s crystallized streets, record-breaking snowfall, past the ice sculptures around the Plains of Abraham park, up and down stairways with names like Casse Cou (translation: “Break Your Neck”) and through the Winter Carnival parade route.
By the same token, the Ducks have also made tracks at Sundance as well as elite winter resort towns in the U.S., Canada and abroad, thanks to “Ducks fans” such as Paris Hilton, Mischa Barton, Lindsay Lohan, Victoria Beckham, Katherine Heigl, Cisco Adler, Antonio Banderas and Mos Def, among others, who adopted them at this and several of Kari Feinstein’s other events. However, don’t rely on celebrity testimonials — try them out for yourself next time, your travels take you from the sun to the snow. Available in silver, white, black and a variety of styles for men, women and children, the collection can be found at www.rubberduckbrand.com as well as Planet Blue, Kitson, andZappos.com
