Although the economy has changed in very dramatic and not always comfortable ways, one thing is certain: one should never skimp on one’s appearance. But because life has become so complicated of late, why shouldn’t beauty or grooming be simple. Hairdresser Kyle Mathis has the right idea. The design of his newly opened Santa Monica salon is inspirational, resembling a hybrid of an art gallery and a recording studio, instead of the usual, girly and fussy salon. Mathis and his team (at this writing), use Bumble & Bumble exclusively (though that will change in time as his own user-friendly product line hits the market). However, he gets you (and might just keep you) where it counts…with courtesy and professionalism.
Kyle has been around the block before, as both an acclaimed instructor and one-time owner of the Mathis Murphy in Venice. However, instead of trying to reproduce his early successes, he created a salon based on what he felt his customers would want instead. What results is an ambiance that is more comfortable and relaxed, with a team that balances their creativity with the importance of getting to know the individual customer. While the salon has a bit of a rock and roll feel to it (note musical instruments and Kyle’s occasional penchant of playing them), what’s missing is that snooty rock and roll attitude, which ensures you get a look that is sure to be a hit with your friends, family, co-workers and the real you. As one recent customer put it, “you will not be helped, you will be cared for...and truly, what is better than that?”
And how! Manicurist Ima offers a pampering rose petal/cocoanut milk foot soak as a part of her package. In addition to precision coloring, customizing Goldwell products to different parts of one’s head (permanent on the scalp, semi-permanent on the ends), they also can add a side of “guacamole”—an avocado conditioner that leaves hair sparkling. Kyle also can cut hair wet or dry, depending on your hair’s texture and condition. Friend and colleague Leyla Messian was thoroughly impressed with his finesse when handling ethnic hair texture, rendering her curls supple and perfectly formed.
We could name celebrity clients, but why do that when Kyle’s aim is to make you the celebrity? He does it particularly well with his famous dry cuts, and is reinforced with people who know cuts, color and personality just as well. This week, one lucky reader will receive a relaxing and revitalized afternoon at the salon, with consultation, cut and color. PLUS:Two runners up will get a treatment, wash and blow dry each.
